The Haggard Mind
|
 |
|
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” Proverbs 14:12
It’s enough to haggard your mind if you let it: Just five years ago, a Baxter Springs, Kansas lawyer threatened to sue the schools if they portrayed the Nativity of Christ in their Christmas program; the Supreme Court of the State of Hawaii judged that same sex marriages are lawful. These were news “headlines.” On the “Today Show” they interviewed some beautiful, righteous-looking people (men & women) who were celebrating the court’s decision.
The truth is that many young people will see and hear these attractive people and believe that their ways are right. The story of the birth of Jesus Christ will be more completely hidden from the eyes of the public school children, and more and more of them will grow up not knowing “the Way, the Truth and the Life.” And God will give them over to depraved minds and wicked ways. (Romans 1:18-25)
In my haggard mind, I would call Christians to arms. But in my rightful mind, I know it is not Christ’s way. God does not need us to protect Christ, but we, God’s people, need Him to guide and help us through these challenging times. It is time, my Christian friends, for true followers of Jesus Christ to start making a true witness about what Jesus Christ has done for us and what He means to the world. “Beautiful Christians” are what children need to be seeing and hearing; true Christians continually give God credit for all the marvelous things God has done, and is doing, through Jesus Christ in their lives.
Too many of our Supreme Court judges are Don Quixote’s riding forth gallantly challenging windmills, thinking they are saving America’s liberty. Our country’s founders and fathers of the Constitution of the United States were concerned with separation of church and state. Their concern had to do with church hierarchy, not with children’s programs.
But, as the church of Jesus Christ, Christians need to be asking in this entire hubbub: What is God doing? I think God is making it very clear that it’s time His people start making a true witness to the world. Witness to who God and Jesus Christ truly are; and what God has done for the world through Jesus. Only as people look to God and God’s ways, and confess those ways, will God give them the ways that lead to Life.
Tell someone about the true meaning of Christmas, and have a Merry Christmas.
Just a haggard thought,
Rev. Dan E. Haggard
